The Creation and Artistic Production Process at Muzéo
Muzéo's publishing business involves producing, promoting and distributing works of art in collaboration with artists, galleries, institutions, foundations or their beneficiaries. This approach also makes it possible to showcase works that can be produced in multiples or limited editions.
The first step is to define a target clientele and a use for these works of art: what messages and meanings are sought in the staging of an artistic work, and above all, for what audience? Muzéo's artistic direction carries out iconographic and curation work to identify an initial selection of artists or works that can meet the desired problem. Muzéo also works on the scenography, giving thought to the choice of media and formats, then imagines their installation to enhance the project.
Close collaboration with the artists then begins. The artists selected may be established artists, who may or may not already have a structure for disseminating their work, or emerging artists. Muzéo's art department plays an active role in the conceptualisation of the works, the hanging and framing where appropriate, as well as the production techniques (engraving, printing, sculpture, photography, frescoes, painting, etc.). However, the artist's vision remains paramount, and he alone will grant the right to exploit his work, via a detailed contract between the artist or his successors in title and Muzéo. This contract specifies the use, destination, formats, number of copies, exhibition venues and remuneration.
Production, Management and Installation of Works of Art
The production of works requires decisions on formats, media, the number of copies required and the production techniques to be used. Next, it is imperative to manage this production in the studio, whether by craftsmen or artists, guaranteeing impeccable quality and a level of artistic excellence. Finally, the installation of the works in the planned locations is also part of the process.
This publishing approach often makes it possible to direct an artistic work towards media or destinations that had not been envisaged at the outset. This model enriches the possibilities for artistic creation and opens up new perspectives, while respecting the quality and requirements of the artists.
Muzéo distributes and promotes its published works in two ways: BtoC and BtoB.
The first approach, BtoC, is via our MUZEO.COM Art Shop, which offers a selection of several thousand works of art and artists. These works are generally not limited in terms of production, so that as many people as possible can have access to them. They include many pieces that are part of our cultural heritage, with intellectual property rights that have often fallen into the public domain. We therefore offer the opportunity to acquire masterpieces, reproduced with exemplary quality by artisan framers in the Paris region. Customers can choose the format, support and framing, if required, and digitisation as well as digital printing on paper and canvas mean that editions can be customised.
The second approach, BtoB, is aimed at customers such as hotels, company headquarters, retirement homes, retail chains and shopping centres. These public establishments often need artistic content to decorate their spaces. Muzéo then offers a selection of suitable works, with a very precise contractual framework, including artistic direction, promotion, communication, and sometimes the production and installation of the works. The remuneration of the artists is also included in this framework.
Publishing works of art thus enables a wider dissemination of artistic work, while increasing the visibility of the artists and their remuneration.
